RIP CURRENT CHALLENGE
OUTCOME
The project successfully developed an innovative approach to rip current safety education, specifically targeting high-risk beach users, mainly Australian males aged 15-39. By understanding the behavioral traits of this demographic, such as "bravado and overconfidence," we crafted engaging and memorable safety messages that resonated deeply with them. The new strategies included dynamic, interactive signage and targeted campaigns that effectively captured attention and conveyed critical safety information. As a result, the ability of beachgoers to correctly identify and respond to rip currents improved significantly, leading to a marked decrease in drowning incidents.
CHALLENGE
Understanding and addressing the common behaviors of "bravado and overconfidence" in high-risk beach users is challenging. Developing dynamic and interactive educational tools that capture and retain their attention requires significant innovation. Balancing the need for high-impact, innovative safety campaigns within limited resources and budget constraints is essential.
REFLECTION
In the early stage of planning, we gathered extensive background data through the research , which was crucial for understanding our main target group. We conducted detailed user research to cater to their preferences and designed specific concepts that made rip current testing more appealing to this group. During the development stages, we kept refining and updating our ideas. This iterative process involved several rounds of user research and sketching, continuously optimizing our concepts. If we had more time, or in future projects, we'd like to improve by increasing prototyping and testing phases, especially focused on fixed user groups.
Throughout the project, our team collaboration was harmonious and unified. Every team member brought their expertise to the table, improving different aspects of the project. In terms of communication, we transitioned from initial fears due to language barriers to a team that respects and shares opinions openly about the project. This change greatly enhanced our collaboration and project progress.
In the project, my personal growth is reflected in my ability to independently update UI interfaces. I was able to add new features and pages to the client's existing software interface while ensuring that these additions were stylistically and color-coordinated with the posters created by other team members. Through this process, I not only improved my design skills but also enhanced my ability to collaborate effectively with the team.
